Making Housing Affordable and Abundant
Affordable housing is critical to the long term economic development of the Commonwealth. Without an adequate supply of units for working families, Massachusetts firms have been unable to grow their employment levels. In addition, it is critical for the State to build on the success of efforts to de-densify subsidized housing and raise the standard of living in the existing inventory.
Finally, persistent homelessness in our inner cities speaks to the special needs of a diverse population that runs the gamut from single men with substance abuse problems to families facing foreclosure.
As your state senator I would:
- Work to expand the number of affordable housing units in the District and to rehab public housing through public/private partnerships.
- Support the expansion of the SoftSecond loan program which encourages first time home owners.
- Support the Enabling Act to Save Affordable Housing which would allow municipalities to regulate rents in buildings with expiring mortgages, including buildings that have already converted to market rents.
- Look to build on the success of the Mishawum Park development in Charlestown and work to replace the projects with an equal number of units in the spirit of the Hope 6 Project at Maverick landing.
