Making High Quality Education a Reality

Education is the great equalizer in our society. Those who have a solid foundation thrive and those who don’t rapidly fall behind. I have come to believe, in my own life, that it is the key determining factor and I know I benefited enormously from the educational opportunities I had.

Early childhood learning opportunities give young children a head start. All day kindergarten strengthens their preparation and provides working parents with a safe and secure environment for their children. Adequate funding for public schools and after school enrichment ensures that the promise of equal education is fully realized. And support for our great public institutions of higher learning puts a college degree within reach of many of the state’s poorer residents.

As your state senator I would:

  • Ensure that all state education mandates are adequately funded and that fees for special programs are eliminated.
  • Charter schools are fully funded by the state and don’t compete for funding with public schools. In addition, I would ensure that the innovation sharing promised by the charter school concept is actually implemented.
  • Find creative ways to bring accountability and measurement to our schools that goes beyond the single MCAS dimension and works collaboratively with teachers and encourages rather than blames them.
