Office and Professional Employees International Union, Local 453 Backs Flaherty for State Senate
CHARLESTOWN: Tim Flaherty, a candidate for the Middlesex, Suffolk, and Essex State Senate seat, today announced that his campaign has received the endorsement of the Office and Professional Employees International Union, Local 453, which represents many MBTA employees.
“During these tough times we need men and women in elective office who are 100 percent behind labor, and behind our union,” said Mark McLaughlin, President and Business Manager of OPEIU/Local 453. “We need to change the tone of Beacon Hill back to the days when politicians were behind the hard working men and women of this Commonwealth. I strongly urge your support for Tim Flaherty, who is seeking to unseat incumbent…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CHARLESTOWN: Dennis Benzan—an attorney and community organizer who ran for State Senate last spring—has endorsed his former opponent Tim Flaherty in the September 14 Democratic Primary election.
"Tim Flaherty will put the people's interests ahead of the special interests,” said Benzan. “Tim will make our communities proud in the State Senate."
“Dennis Benzan ran a thoughtful campaign focused on the issues,” said Flaherty. “I am honored to have his endorsement and very pleased to have his help in reaching out to voters in the coming weeks.”
This is not the first time that Flaherty’s former opponents have backed his candidacy. Paul Nowicki, a former Chelsea City Councilor who ran against Flaherty in 2007, has also endorsed Flaherty. Additionally, former State Senator Jarrett Barrios—who, since leaving…

He will appear with Flaherty at two events on Thursday, August 19, in Chelsea and Cambridge (4:00-5:00 p.m. at the Bella Tropicale Restaurant, 13 5th Street, Chelsea, and 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the new Flaherty Campaign Cambridge Headquarters, 563 Mass Ave, Cambridge).

Tim Flaherty announced yesterday that he is not going to push for a recount but will run again for the Middlesex Suffolk and Essex seat in September primary:
“Over the past few days, my campaign has been reviewing reports of voting irregularities in Everett. While these reports are concerning, our campaign has decided not to pursue a recount, as it would distract from our goal of winning in September. This race has been a statistical dead heat, with my campaign winning in five out of eight communities, and separated by just over 100 votes out of more than 11,000 cast.”

“I believe voters should have a clear opportunity to decide, between myself and Sal DiDomenico, who they want to be their state senator. We have different ideas about the role government should play in people’s lives, and I believe this district needs a strong progressive voice. I intend to be a candidate in September and…

Statement of Tim Flaherty
For Immediate Release
April 13, 2010
“The unofficial vote tally tonight shows a margin of just over 100 votes separating myself and Sal DiDomenico. This race is simply too close to call. The essence of democracy is that every vote must count. Throughout the day, we’ve seen evidence of voting irregularities in Everett. We are therefore calling for a recount and an investigation into these irregularities. This is a race about ideas—restoring respect for public service, standing up for progressive values, and restarting our economy. Because these issues are so critical, we must make sure the people’s voice is heard and that every vote is counted fairly.”

BOSTON GLOBE | SUN APR 11, 2010
The state Senate seat formerly held by Anthony Galluccio, which stretches from Saugus to Brighton, contains considerable ethnic and economic diversity. Residents deserve a forceful advocate. In Tuesday’s Democratic primary, the Globe endorses Tim Flaherty, a lawyer and former prosecutor from Cambridge. (There are no Republican candidates for the seat.)
Like his five rivals, Flaherty touts himself as a strong progressive. And like most, he expresses skepticism about some aspects of the state’s successful education reforms. Even so, Flaherty would deal with issues in a more thoughtful way. While supportive of union rights, he is open to at least some measures to help local governments save on employees’ health costs. He supports a destination casino but not racetrack slot machines.
Flaherty also shows an innate political savvy.…

How to help residents hard-hit by the down economy is a key issue as a crowded field of Democrats vies for their party’s nomination in a special election for state Senate.
The six candidates in next Tuesday’s primary all promise to make the economy a focal point if they are chosen to fill the Middlesex, Suffolk, and Essex seat formerly held by Anthony Galluccio.
“The top three issues in Massachusetts are jobs, jobs, and jobs,’’ said Timothy R. Flaherty, a former Norfolk County assistant district attorney and one of three Cambridge candidates in the race.
With the primary fast approaching, the candidates are stepping up efforts to connect with voters in the district that includes Chelsea and Everett; parts of Cambridge, Revere, Saugus, and Somerville; and the Charlestown…

CAMBRIDGE - Next Tuesday, April 13, voters will go to the polls to elect the Democratic nominee for the special May election to fill the state senate seat that was, until this past January, held by Anthony Galluccio.
Elected about two years ago, Galluccio did not have the time necessary to make a clear imprint on the seat and his personal problems served as a major distraction. With no Republican challenger (and a little-known Independent challenger) on the May 11 ballot, Tuesday’s vote will most certainly determine the ultimate victor.
The Galluccio soap opera, of course, was just one of a series of legal, ethical and moral controversies that have disrupted Beacon Hill in recent months and years. It comes — also of course — amid the…

On Tuesday, April 13, Democratic primary voters in the Middlesex, Suffolk and Essex district will select a replacement to former state senator Anthony Galluccio. Since the district -- which includes all or parts of Cambridge, Somerville, Allston-Brighton, Saugus, Revere, Everett, Chelsea and Charlestown -- is overwhelmingly Democratic, the special primary winner will undoubtedly become heir to the seat once held by champions of the LGBT community Jarrett Barrios and Thomas Birmingham.
This district has grown accustomed to fierce advocacy and strong leadership in its representation on Beacon Hill on a number of progressive causes. Its diverse constituency of immigrants, working families, students, and other newcomers demands its senator possess an expert grasp of policy, a passion for advocacy, and raw political talent. For these reasons, the…

EVERETT ADVOCATE | WED MAR 17, 2010
By Tim Flaherty
Last week, leaders in the state Legislature announced that aid to cities and towns could be cut by up to 4 percent in the next fiscal year. This was devastating news for cities and towns already struggling to balance their budgets. With so many people unemployed, underemployed, and with businesses struggling to stay afloat, the tax base for these cities has been dramatically reduced.
The colleges and universities in these towns have a dirty little secret, though. While local communities across the Commonwealth are laying off public safety workers and cutting vital services such as homeless veterans shelters in a desperate attempt to balance their budgets, the colleges are not paying a penny in excise taxes for their fleets of vehicles.
Everyone who owns a car across the Commonwealth received their excise tax…

Following Tuesday evening’s debate of the senatorial special election candidates at Chelsea City Hall some things become self-apparent.
First, this is a contest being waged against three main contenders – and of that number, two are locked in the battle more so than the third, who is gaining in recognition.
Attorney Tim Flaherty scored a hit in the debate. He was senatorial in every way. He answered all the questions absolutely with firmness and he was at all times unambiguous about where he stood. He used a every second allotted to him and never went over – and at all times, his answers were clear and unequivocal, informative and well thought out.
Bottom line – he looked and felt like the next senator.
In addition, Flaherty supporters mobbed the…

From the onset, Flaherty has the look and the feel of an early favorite in the race.
He has that look and feel because his organization got off the ground first, has organized quickly and he is able to raise funds.
